Teaching Art History
updated January 31, 2025

Recorded here is my own personal collection of articles, resources, favorite links, teaching ideas, and lesson plans. It encompasses many years, from the very beginning of my experience studying and learning about Waldorf to the present time. People from all around the world visit my site and recommend it to others. Welcome!

This site records my journey. I hope my honesty is encouraging and helps break down some barriers that may prevent people from trying Waldorf methods. Because this is an ongoing site documenting my curriculum planning and ideas, some materials are more Waldorf-y than others. Please feel free to take what you like and leave the rest.

I use and recommend Lotus Stewart's excellent website, Art History Kids; however, you can also find a significant number of art history lesson plans online for free once you have chosen an artist. It just takes a lot of searching to find ideas that you like!

I started teaching Art History when the art teacher at our homeschool co-op left and it fell to me. Not knowing anything at all about how to teach art, I decided that we would just do a study of a famous artist each month; that way, I could read them picture books (which is my comfort zone) and then we could take it from there.

As it turns out, I absolutely love teaching Art History, and I've started to compile quite a few notes on my blog. So I'm making a list of links here to keep it easy to find things!

Summer 2022

I started in the summer of 2022, doing an Art History class one-on-one with a 7th grade student.

That class was Magnificent Modern Art, from Art History Kids, and we went through the online course together. Separately, during the week, we each watched the videos and did 2 of the 4 art prompts. Then we met up on the weekend to share our work and chat about what we had learned.

Here are all of my notes:

I was completely hooked and we began to study an artist of the month each month from then on!
